Anywhere you go in the world, getting around when you get there can be a bit of a headache. Of course Turkey has a very efficient and frequent public transport system of local buses and coaches as well as taxis, but nothing really compares to driving around your holiday destination with the freedom of your own hire car. By making arrangements in advance of your arrival, you can guarantee being mobile from the time you step off the plane to when you return, having seen all the sights in the region you are staying, in comfort and safety.

Hiring a car and going your own way in Turkey, provides excellent opportunities to discover the many aspects of the country, the freedom to stop as the fancy takes you, and the chance to explore places away from the well worn 'organized tourist' tracks or not serviced by public transport.

Driving in Turkey is not as daunting as you might think. True, Turkish drivers are not the best in the world, however, outside the main towns the roads are relatively quiet and well signposted.

By following a few simple guidelines you will soon discover that the advantages of traveling independently.  

· Drive defensively.
· Don't get angry
· Always give the other driver the benefit of any doubt.
· Obey the speed limits.

The standard of the roads between all major towns and cities is generally good, with a growing number of highways connecting the larger cities. Driving in western and central Turkey during the day and at night is safe, even in remote areas.

When parking, it is of course wise to take the usual precautions of locking the car, locking valuables in the trunk and using a supervised car park whenever possible.
